Questions? Here to help!
Why is fragrance-free cleansing important for vulvar skin?
Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect more than just your cycle. As estrogen levels fluctuate and decline, many women begin noticing increased dryness, sensitivity, or irritation in the vulvar area.
What once felt like a routine shower may suddenly feel uncomfortable. Traditional body washes that worked for years can begin to sting, dry out the skin, or leave the area feeling tight. That’s because menopausal skin, especially vulvar skin, becomes thinner, drier, and more reactive — and that’s all normal.
During this stage of life, cleansing should feel supportive rather than stripping. A wash formulated for delicate external tissue can help maintain comfort without interfering with the vagina’s self-regulating environment.
Understanding why that distinction matters starts with anatomy.
What is the difference between the vagina and the vulva?
The vagina is the internal canal and is self-cleaning, maintaining its own pH and microbial balance. It does not require internal washing. The vulva refers to the external genital skin, including the labia and surrounding tissue.
Unlike the vagina, the vulva is external skin. It contains sweat glands and hair follicles and can accumulate moisture, bacteria, and natural scent, just like other areas of the body. A feminine wash should be used on the external vulva only.
VMAGIC® Vulva Wash is formulated with this distinction in mind. It is intended exclusively for external cleansing and does not disrupt the internal vaginal environment.
How does menopause affect vulvar skin?
Estrogen plays a key role in maintaining tissue thickness, elasticity, and hydration. As estrogen declines, vulvar skin may become thinner, drier, less elastic, and more prone to irritation. Skin that once tolerated standard body wash may now react with redness, itching, or tightness.
In addition to hormonal changes, other factors can increase vulvar sensitivity during menopause:
- Heat and sweating
- Synthetic fabrics
- Increased friction
- Changes in immune response
Because the vulva becomes more delicate, cleansing habits often need to shift during midlife.
Why isn’t traditional body wash the best choice for vulvar skin?
Most body washes are formulated for thicker skin on the arms, legs, and torso. They frequently contain stronger surfactants designed to remove oil, sweat, and buildup from resilient skin.
On vulvar tissue, these ingredients can:
- Strip natural moisture
- Weaken the protective skin barrier
- Increase dryness
- Cause stinging or irritation
Even products labeled “gentle” may still contain fragrance or essential oils that are too strong for menopausal skin. Choosing a feminine wash specifically designed for the vulva can reduce the likelihood of irritation.
What makes VMAGIC Vulva Wash different?
VMAGIC Vulva Wash is formulated specifically for vulvar skin and for external use only. It is fragrance-free, formulated without harsh detergents, and designed to cleanse gently for sensitive skin.
Fragrance is one of the most common irritants in vulvar care products. Even essential oils marketed as “natural” can trigger burning or itching, especially when tissue becomes thinner and more reactive during menopause.
VMAGIC® Vulva Wash avoids unnecessary additives that may contribute to discomfort.
Is it normal for the vulva to have a natural scent?
It’s important to clarify something that is often misunderstood. A healthy vagina does not need deodorizing. It maintains its own internal balance. The vulva, however, contains sweat glands and can develop a mild, normal scent, particularly after exercise, heat exposure, or hormonal shifts.
That scent doesn’t mean something is wrong. If you notice a strong, fishy, or unusual odor, that may indicate infection and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
VMAGIC® Vulva Wash is fragrance-free, which helps avoid irritation that can sometimes worsen odor concerns rather than improve them. The goal of cleansing is comfort and hygiene, not masking normal scent.
What is the difference between feminine wash and douching?
VMAGIC Vulva Wash is for external use only. Douching (or flushing liquid into the vaginal canal) is not recommended. Internal cleansing can disrupt the vaginal microbiome and increase the risk of imbalance.
The vagina regulates itself naturally, so cleansing should focus exclusively on the external vulvar skin. Using a feminine wash correctly means respecting that boundary.
How do you use VMAGIC Vulva Wash?
For best results:
- Use during showering or bathing.
- Apply a small amount to the external vulvar area.
- Gently cleanse the labia and surrounding tissue.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
- Pat dry gently with a soft towel.
Do not insert the product into the vagina.
Frequency depends on your body and lifestyle. Some women prefer once-daily use. Others may use it after exercise or during times of increased sweating.
If dryness increases, consider adjusting frequency and pairing cleansing with a vulvar moisturizer for additional comfort.
Should you pair vulva wash with a moisturizer?
For many women during menopause, cleansing is only one part of vulvar care. If dryness or irritation is present, pairing a gentle feminine wash with barrier-supportive products such as VMAGIC® Vulva Balm can help maintain overall comfort.
Cleansing removes sweat and buildup. Moisturizing helps support hydration and protect the skin barrier. Together, they create a balanced approach to vulvar care during hormonal transitions.
When should you speak with a healthcare provider?
While mild dryness and sensitivity are common during menopause, certain symptoms require medical evaluation.
Consult a healthcare provider if you experience:
- Persistent burning
- Pain with urination
- Unusual discharge
- Strong or sudden odor
- Bleeding unrelated to menstruation
A feminine wash supports hygiene, but it does not treat infections or medical conditions.
How can you support changing skin during menopause?
Menopause is a natural stage of life, but the body does change. As vulvar tissue becomes more delicate, thoughtful cleansing can help maintain comfort without disrupting natural balance.
VMAGIC® Vulva Wash offers a fragrance-free, gentle option designed specifically for external vulvar skin.
- External use only.
- Fragrance-free.
- Formulated for sensitive, menopause-conscious care.
Because supporting your body should feel gentle, not irritating.
I thought you weren't supposed to wash your vagina?
You are right, the Vagina is like a "self cleaning oven" and you do not need to wash or cleanse it. However, the Vulva is a different story. If you choose to wash your Vulva (Mons Pubis, Labia Minora, Labia Majora, Clitoris and Vaginal Opening-the external skin) it is best to use a mild, gentle cleanser or warm water alone.
Why can't I use a traditional body wash on my vulva?
Traditional body washes can be full of harsh surfactants and more often than not have added fragrance. Fragrances, even essential oils, can be irritating to delicate vulvar skin and can even disrupt the natural protective biome of this delicate area.
Can the wash be used other places than the vulva?
Yes, you can use our wash all over the body. Our gentle, fragrance free cleanser can easily replace your daily body wash. With our new 2X size, our wash lasts even longer.
Did the feminine wash change?
There has been no change to the wash formula, however we are now providing you twice the amount of product for the same price!
Why should I use a non-foaming intimate cleanser?
Oftentimes foam is created by using harsh surfactants (think SLS) and while those may be ok for some other types of skin it is not recommended to use on your delicate vulva skin.
How does this support my bodies pH?
Our vulva wash is developed specifically to support the pH of your vulva (slightly more acidic than the vagina) and not disrupt it with fragrance or harsh ingredients.
Will this prevent odor? Will this make my vulva smell good?
We have intentionally left out fragrance as it can be disruptive to your natural microbiome. More often than not if you have an odor there is a bigger underlying problem that you should check in with your physician about. A fragranced cleanser can mask a bigger issue.
Are Medicine Mama products estrogen free?
All of our products are hormone and soy free.
What makes the VMAGIC® vulva wash the best feminine wash?
Unlike other feminine washes that contain harsh surfactants and more often than not have added fragrance, VMAGIC's Vulva Wash uses only natural ingredients, is fragrance free, and pH balanced.
Fragrance and essential oils can be irritating to delicate vulvar skin and can even disrupt the natural protective biome of this delicate area.
Is this intimate cleanser also a vaginal wash?
Your vagina, or the internal canal separate from the external vulva, is essentially a "self cleaning oven" and does not need to be washed which is why you do not see any vaginal washes within our product line.
However, the Vulva, or external area of the genitalia, is skin that is very delicate and requires the most gentle cleansing.
There is no need for expensive scented soaps (in fact, they could be detrimental!). Un scented, gentle, or natural feminine washes especially formulated for this area are key.

Excellent soap. It feels super soft when applied. Effective against odor. However, I still experience a slight burning sensation when using it. It's been a month and I still feel the same. Could it be one of the ingredients? Even so, I recommend it…

The product is ok, soft soap, nothing special .BUT, what's most disappointing is the customer service. I've sent six emails asking to initiate a return and haven't received a single response. The company completely ignores the customer.

I had tried other creams and washes that contained estrogen and immediately felt breast changes. Within two days I found these products. Have been happy with them.
