Medicine Mama’s Tips for Luminous Summer Skin

“Summer means happy times and good sunshine.
It means going to the beach, going to Disneyland, having fun.”
–Brian Wilson

For many, summer is just that, a time of wonderful frivolity and relaxation, filled with memories sand, and love. Summer can also boast extreme environmental factors such as high temperatures, humidity, sweat, intense UV radiation, chemicals, air conditioning, and more.

These intense elements host an array of skin issues including oily skin, acne breakouts, dark spots, sun damage, dryness, itchiness, and dehydration.

Here at Medicine Mama, we’ve devoted the time and effort into making organic, pure, uncompromising skincare that heals and reveals beautiful, healthy skin, regardless of sensitivities, age, or complications.

Here are a few tips for luminous summer skin:

  1. Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. During summer our bodies are likely to sweat and lose more water; Keep you and your skin hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, and even more if you are out in the heat.

  2. EAT your water. Indulge on fresh fruits and vegetables; their water can be more easily absorbed by our cells than drinking water and they are also a rich source of nutrients which keep the skin supple.

  3. Cut down on alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Always drink an extra glass of water for every glass of alcohol/cup of coffee you take. Over consumption can lead to dehydration.

  4. Increase your intake of essential fatty acids. selenium, zinc, vitamin C and E rich foods. They shield your skin from UV rays-produced free radicals. Use the natural benefits of coconut oil, salmon, avocado.

  5. Mind your pH. From heavy metals-rich water, alkaline soaps/gels, to the chemicals in pools and natural bacteria in lakes, your skin is being stripped of natural oils. Take showers after exposure to chemical laden water. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends showering only in warm, not hot water and keep bath time to a minimum to avoid further dryness. Wear non-irritating clothes and use gentle unscented products.

  6. KEEP SKIN CLEAN. Summertime perspiration can cause extra bacteria to build up and lead to more frequent breakouts and blemishes in the warm months. Is your skin ACNE, BREAK-OUT, ECZEMA, SENSITIVE PRONE (regardless of the season)? This is really our specialty. We have pure, proven and simple solutions.

Medicine Mama’s Zinc Facial Soap is carefully formulated to detoxify, moisturize, and nourish skin. It is even effective on acne, eczema, contact dermatitis, redness and rash.

  7. EXFOLIATE. Exfoliation gets rid of surface debris, prevents cellular build-up and keeps the skin lubricious. Your skin is more prone to lose its elasticity and collagen buildup if not exfoliated, stimulated and oxygenated. It also preconditions the skin to accept products.

Dry brushing is the best way to exfoliate the skin, slough of dead skin cells as well as stimulate cell regrowth. Stay exfoliated by dry brushing with Medicine Mama’s Body Brush Kit.

Here’s our favorite DIY exfoliation recipe that you can make at home:
    2 tbs of honey
    2 tbs of oatmeal
½ of an avocado (you can eat the other half!)
2 tbs of coarse sea salt
Mix together into a paste, massage in a circular motion, rinse with warm water before you put on your daily dose of Sweet Bee.

  8. MOISTURIZE. Summer calls for light, fast penetrating, season-appropriate moisturizer. Quenching the skins’ thirst and locking in moisture without clogging pores, Our Sweet Bee Magic is perfect for ALL skin types year round.

  9. PROTECT AND HEAL YOUR LIPS. Invest in a great petroleum-free natural lip balm for your chapped, sun and wind-burned lips once the temperature rises.  Our Sweet Bee Magic Wand is the perfect lip balm and travel companion!

  10. FEET. Take care of your flip-flop, beach, bare feet!

  11. SUNSCREEN. Our most important advice here is: Wear an organic sunscreen free of chemicals, parabens and sulfates. “Sunscreen is the best tool we currently have to lower the incidence of skin cancers and wrinkles,” says Dr. James Spencer, a dermatologist in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Here are some simple dos and don’t’s for purchasing a healthy sunscreen that will protect your skin while also not bearing it down with a heavy chemical load:
  • Don’t buy a sunscreen that uses oxybenzone, this chemical could disrupt hormones. It acts like estrogen in the body and is associated with endometriosis in women.
  • Do look for a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, which means finding a brand that uses the phrase “Broad Spectrum.”
  • Don’t use aerosol sprays or powders. With these types of sunscreen, you can accidentally inhale nano-size titanium dioxide, a possible carcinogen.
  • Do look for the USDA Organic Seal.  This seal means that your natural sunscreen has no harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and no genetic engineering is involved.

Research shows that as many as 3 out of 4 Americans are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D deficiency is shown to cause depression, chronic fatigue, osteoporosis and new research is showing that vitamin D deficiency is even an indicator of cancer. So what’s a girl to do?!
